Hammond was a pioneering Chicagoland football team, eclipsed only by the Racine Avenue Cardinals. Not only did gridiron giants George Halas and Paddy Driscoll get their professional start with Hammond, the team called Cubs Park* home the 1919 season - one year before the American Professional Football Association formed.

Of the APFA's original 14 teams, the Hammond Pros were one of the few to survive most of the decade, folding after 1926, along with Akron and Canton. Considering this was the nascent era when teams struggled to make payroll, fielding a team for seven seasons in a patchwork league was going the distance.
